Jesus was the First Liberal Professor

Liberalism, as defined by merriam-webster.com: a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties and a movement in modern Protestantism emphasizing intellectual liberty and the spiritual and ethical content of Christianity

That is hardly offensive, but the religious and political right have, for the last 20 years, at least, been successful in defining liberalism as anti-freedom, anti-American, anti-God, and have been so adamant and consistent with this distortion, shouted it so loudly for so long, that, too many—including those who are in fact liberal—it has become a profanity.

In Tulsa, it takes courage to be open that one has even moderately liberal political views, on anything.

Then we have the political circus that is the Republican Primaries.

“I don’t think there is such a thing,” said Prelate Santorum  of Obama as a liberal Christian. “To take what is plainly written and say that ‘I don’t agree with that, therefore I don’t have to pay attention to it,’ means you’re not what you say you are. You’re a liberal something, but you’re not a Christian.” (See it in context here.)

And then, we have that Professor of Biblical Studies and Theology, Herman Cain, talking about the trial  of Jesus: The liberal court found Him guilty of false offenses and sentenced Him to death, all because He changed the hearts and minds of men with an army of 12…..Never before and not since has there ever been such a perfect conservative…….For over 2,000 years the world has tried hard to erase the memory of the perfect conservative, and His principles of compassion, caring and common sense. [At least the Hermanator is no longer in contention, but see this abomination here.]

Read the words of Jesus—decide which is a liberal or conservative, or, more correctly, which would conservatives follow and which would they condemn:

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [Matthew 5:9]

You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. [Matthew 5:27-30]

Resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [Matthew 5:39]

I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you; [Matthew 5:44]

And when thou pray, thou shall not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in  the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou pray, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret… [Matthew 6:6 & 7]

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. [Matthew 6:15]

Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. [Matthew 7:1-5]

If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. [Matthew 19:21]

If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. [Matthew 19:21]

Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. [Matthew 22:21]

But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed,  because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just. [Luke 14:13 &14.]

The way I read these, I see one that might be accepted by the religious/political right, and it says that lust is equivalent to adultery and requires self-mutilation to remain holy.  Pretty tough stuff. What would Bishop Gingrich say about this one?

Today, so-called “Christian Conservatives” speak about what they only imagine Jesus would have said about social values. They claim to know WWJD or WWJS (What Would Jesus do or Say), and while they cannot find any evidence of their statements, they have (and often still do) believe that

  • Jesus disapproved of playing cards, drinking any and all alcoholic beverages, dancing, singing, wearing bathing suits, viewing motion pictures.
  • Jesus didn’t want pianos and organs in churches,  because either: they did not exist during Bible times or because they were then used mainly in saloons and brothels and were the creations of Satan to further his work.
  • Jesus disapproved of eating ice cream Sundays, which is why its name was altered to “sundae.”
  • Jesus disapproved of masturbation and homosexuality.
  • Jesus disapproved of family planning (birth-control) and abortion.
  • Jesus approved of slavery and segregation.
  • Jesus supported the death penalty.

Ah, the light just broke over the Horizon.  I now understand why the religious/political right can be Christian and not adhere to the words of Jesus (unless, of course, the words support what they want to do): Jesus was not a Christian! The church did not exist until after he died and was the creation of the disorganized band known as his disciples and followers of the way and it took several hundred years for all the powers-that-be to even decide that Jesus was one with God the Father and to get rid of all those nagging theological problems, like re-incarnation, adoption, part of the joy of being in heaven was seeing the suffering in Hell.

People like Prelate Santorum, the Hermanator and Bishop Gingrich can and do claim Christianity and wear the emblem proudly and disclaim anyone who does not believe the theology they believe, regardless of whose beliefs are closer to the things that Jesus said. It is easier to forget what Jesus said.

Acting on what they believes he said, the early followers set up a communistic society and two followers—Ananias and Sapphira—were killed by God for withholding from the community a small portion of the proceeds generated from the sale of all their worldly possessions.

Yeah, better forget that story too.

[No, I cannot live up to the standars of the actual words of Jesus and I doubt any one can.]
